Samsung UN55D8000 LED LCD HDTV Review
The Samsung UN55D8000 series has a unique, visually stunning design that minimizes the frame around the screen for a nearly all-picture look. It produces deep black levels with accurate color, along with excellent video processing and improved 3D picture quality. The Smart Hub Internet portal boasts more apps and streaming services than the competition, along with a functional Web browser, and is easier to use thanks to the included dual-sided Bluetooth keyboard with a screen and QWERTY keyboard. Samsung includes two pairs of 3D glasses.
Cosmetically, Samsung trimmed the frame around the active picture area to an astonishing 0.94-inches, giving this Samsung UN55D8000 HDTV an almost all-image appearance once powered-up. It is one of the best-looking TV designs of all time. The display sits on a four-legged, chrome-finished swivel stand (included). Samsung cleaned up the rear by making all connections built-in, sans component and composite AV inputs which, like last year, still require included dongles. With a panel depth of just 1.2 inches the 8000 is one of the slimmest sets available. The remote included with flagship Samsung TVs like the UN55UND8000 is a flipper. The top side of the wedge-shaped rectangle offers standard TV controls that shoot infrared commands to the TV, while the bottom gets a full QWERTY keypad along with a screen, and works via Bluetooth (which doesn't need line-of-sight).
The new-for-2011 remote control is an asymmetrical, wedge-shaped dual-sided affair. The A-side has the standard TV controls with a numeric keyboard, and the usual source, menu, volume, channel +/-, tools, etc. buttons. There’s a backlight for this side. New for 2011 is an “E-manual” button for an electronic user manual. There's a big difference between seeing the game and seeing every split second of it. That's where Auto Motion Plus 240Hz technology comes in. All the action in every frame is analyzed and then adjusted so nothing goes by in a blur. From quarterbacks to cyber warrior, the action is always smooth, sharp and fluid. Connect a thumb drive or digital camera quickly and easily via one of the UN55D8000's USB ports. An intuitive, user-friendly interface allows access to videos, music, or pictures via the remote.
The UN55D8000 is certainly capable of producing some of the deepest black levels of any TV we've tested in the middle of its screen--which is, again, where we perform all of our measurements--but its poor screen uniformity causes the outer edges to be significantly brighter. Overall it still ranked among the darker displays to our eyes, for example in dim scenes like the push toward the televisions in Chapter 2, falling short of only the Sony and the Kuro and outdoing the others, including the local-dimming Vizio. Samsung includes 3D glasses because the UND8000 series is currently widely available bundled for free with a 3D starter kit, which includes 3D Blu-ray exclusives ("Shrek: The Complete Collection 3D" and a voucher for "Megamind") as well as two pairs of Samsung's new active 3D glasses,
The UN55D8000 TV delivers best-in-class looks and features, but its picture quality--thanks to uneven screen uniformity--is ultimately not as good as that of many less expensive models.
