B With only about 1, 000 pandas left in the world, China is desperately trying to clone(克隆) the animal and save the endangered species(物种). That’s a move similar to what a Texas A & M University

researchers have been undertaking for the past five years in a project called “Noah’s Ark”. Noah’s Ark is aimed at collecting eggs, embryos(胚胎), semen and DNA of endangered animals

and storing them in liquid nitrogen. If certain species should become extinct, Dr. Duane Kraemer, a

professor in Texas A & M’s College of Veterinary Medicine, says there would be enough of the basic

building blocks to reintroduce the species in the future.

It is estimated that as many as 2, 000 species of mammals, birds reptiles will become extinct in over

100 years. The panda, native only to China, is in danger of becoming extinct in the next 25 years.

This week, Chinese scientists said they grew an embryo by introducing cells from a dead female

panda into the egg cells of a Japanese white rabbit. They are now trying to implant the embryo into a

host animal.

The entire procedure could take from three to five years to complete. “The nuclear transfer( 核 子 移 植 ) of one species to another is not easy, and the lack of

available(capable of being used) panda eggs could be a major problem,” Kraemer believes. “They will

probably have to do several hundred transfers to result in one pregnancy (having a baby). It takes a long

time and it’s difficult, but this could be groundbreaking science if it works. They are certainly not putting

any live pandas at risk, so it is worth the effort,” adds Kraemer, who is one of the leaders of the Project

at Texas A& M, the first-ever attempt at cloning a dog.

“They are trying to do something that’s never been done, and this is very similar to our work in

Noah’s Ark. We’re both trying to save animals that face extinction. I certainly appreciate their effort and

there’s a lot we can learn from what they are attempting to do. It’s a research that is very much needed.”

24. The aim of “Noah’s Ark” project is to _______.

A. save endangered animals from dying out

B. make efforts to clone the endangered pandas

C. collect DNA of endangered animals to study

D. transfer the nuclear of one animal to another

25. According to Professor Kraemer, the major problem in cloning pandas would be the lack of _______.

A. enough money

B. host animals

C. qualified researchers

D. available panda eggs

26. The best title for the passage may be _______.

A. China’s Success in Pandas Cloning

B. Exploring the Possibility to Clone Pandas

C. The First Cloned Panda in the World

D. China —the Native Place of Pandas Forever

27. From the passage we know that _______.

A. Kraemer and his team have succeeded in cloning a dog

B. The nuclear transfer of one species to another is easy

C. About two thousand of species will probably die out in a century

D. Kraemer will work with Chinese scientists in clone researches

C

It was a village in India. The people were poor. However, they were not unhappy .After all, their

forefathers had lived in the same way for centuries.

Then one day. Some visitors from the city arrived. They told the villagers there were some people

第2页

elsewhere who liked to eat frog’s legs. However, they did not have enough frogs of their own and so they wanted to buy frogs from other places.
This seemed like money for nothing .There were millions of frogs in the fields around, and they were no use to the villagers. All they had to do was to catch them .Agreement was reached and the children were sent into the fields to catch frogs. Every week a truck arrived to collect the catch and hand over the money. For the first time, the people were able to dream of a better future, but the dream didn’t last long.
The change was hardly noticed at first, but it seemed as if the crops were not doing so well. More worrying was that the children fell ill more often, and, there seemed to be more insects around lately.
The villagers decided that they couldn’t just wait to see the crops failing and the children getting weak. They would have to use the money earned to buy pesticides(杀虫剂) and medicines. Soon there was no money left.
Then the people realized what was happening. It was the frog. They hadn’t been useless. They had been doing an important job---eating insects. Now with so many frogs killed, the insects were increasing more rapidly, they were damaging the crops and spreading diseases.
Now, the people are still poor. But in the evenings they sit in the village square and listen to sounds of insects and frogs. These sounds of the night now have a much deeper meaning. 28. From paragraph 1 we learn that the villagers __________.
A. were poor but somewhat content B. dreamed of having a better life C. worked very hard for centuries D. lived a different life from their forefathers 29. Why did the villagers agree to sell frogs ? A the frogs made too much noise B They needs money to buy medicine C the frogs were easy money D. they wanted to please the visitors 30. What might be the cause if the children’s sickness? A there were too many insects B. the crops didn’t do well C .the visits brought in diseases D. the pesticides were overused 31. What can we infer from the last sentence of the text ? A. Happiness comes from peaceful life in the country B. Health is more important than money C. Good old day will never be forgotten D. The harmony between man and nature is important
D As Internet users become more dependent on the Internet to store information, are people
remembering less?If you know your computer will save information, why store it in your own personal
memory, your brain?Experts are wondering if the Internet is changing what we remember and how.
In a recent study,Professor Betsy Sparrow conducted some experiments. She and her research team
wanted to know how the Internet is changing memory. In the first experiment, they gave people 40 unimportant facts to type into a computer. The first group of people understood that the computer would
第3页

save the information. The second group understood that the computer would not save it. Later, the second group remembered the information better. People in the first group knew they could find the information again,so they did not try to remember it.
In another experiment, the researchers gave people facts to remember, and told them where to find the information on the computer. The information was in a specific computer folder(文件 夹).Surprisingly, people later remembered the folder location(位置)better than the facts. When people use the Internet, they do not remember the information. Rather, they remember how to find it. This is called “transactive memory(交互记忆)”.
According to Sparrow,we are not becoming people with poor memories as a result of the Internet. Instead, computer users are developing stronger transactive memories;that is,people are learning how to organize huge quantities of information so that they are able to access it at a later date. This doesn't mean we are becoming either more or less intelligent, but there is no doubt that the way we use memory is changing. 32.The passage begins with two questions to________. A.introduce the main topic B.show the author's attitude C.describe how to use the Internet D.explain how to store information 33.What can we learn about the first experiment? A.The Sparrow's team typed the information into a computer. B.The two groups remembered the information equally well. C.The first group did not try to remember the information. D.The second group did not understand the information. 34.In transactive memory,people________. A.keep the information in mind B.change the quantity of information C.organize information like a computer D.remember how to find the information 35.What is the effect of the Internet according to Sparrow's research? A.We are using memory differently. B.We are becoming more intelligent. C.We have poorer memories than before. D.We need a better way to access information. 第二节 七选五(共 5 小题,每小题 2 分,满分 10 分)

36 Before I moved to Sicily I had travelled around the whole of Italy, the south and the north, and
第4页

I absolutely fell in love with the culture and the language so I was inspired o learn the language and also to move here. And here I am now, living I Sicily.
37 When you get back home you’ll have lots of stories to tell your friends and family. Even if something isn’t very fun, it will be funny to look back and laugh at those awkward or harsh moments. For example, I was travelling with a group of friends in Pisa and we took the wrong bus to get to the beach area, so we ended up being stuck in the rain and having to walk back.
When you travel you expose yourself to different people. 38 It’s a great learning experience for both you and the other person because you can share and exchange your own ideas and opinions on a range of topics. For example, I met an Iranian philosopher and we talked about the nature of magic. A lot of his ideas were shaped by his Iranian background and Iranian philosophy. 39
Travelling is the realization of home. 40 Since I’ve been away from London, I’ve come to appreciate the little things that I used to take for granted, like our amazing transport – everything runs on time; everything runs well. So sometimes it takes being away from home to realize how much you absolutely love your hometown. A. Travelling might just convince you to move to another country B. They may have a completely different outlook on life C. Travelling could enrich your awareness of the world. D. Travelling will make you a really good storyteller. E.
